Substance Use in Young Adults

Participant Information and Consent

Dear participant,

Thank you for your interest in this study. This study is conducted as part of a university research project and aims to investigate the relationship between personality traits, impulsivity, and substance use behavior in young adults.

Participation is limited to individuals aged 18 to 35 years.

If you agree to participate, you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire that includes questions on sociodemographic information (such as age, gender, and nationality), substance use, personality traits, and impulsivity.

The questionnaire will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. Some questions may address personal behaviors; however, there are no right or wrong answers, and you are encouraged to respond honestly and intuitively.

Participation in this study is entirely voluntary. You may withdraw your consent at any time without giving reasons and without suffering any disadvantages. In this case, no data will be processed.

Please note that questionnaire responses are collected under a participant-generated code (chiffre) and are therefore processed in a pseudonymized form. The code is generated by the participant and does not contain sufficient information to directly identify an individual person (such as name, address, or contact details).

The processing of your data is based on your voluntary consent in accordance with Article 6(1)(a) GDPR and Article 9(2)(a) GDPR (processing of special categories of personal data).

You may withdraw your consent and request deletion of your data at any time by providing your participant-generated code (chiffre). For this reason, you are advised to keep a record of your code.

All collected data will be treated confidentially and in accordance with applicable data protection regulations. Members of the research team are bound by confidentiality obligations. A re-identification of individual participants based on the research dataset is not possible.

Your data will be used exclusively for scientific research purposes and will not be shared with third parties. The data will be stored in pseudonymized form and retained in accordance with applicable legal requirements and the principles of good scientific practice.

Your Rights

In accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to:

• obtain information about your personal data,

• request the correction of inaccurate personal data,

• request the restriction of processing,

• request the deletion of personal data where legally applicable,

• withdraw your consent at any time without giving reasons.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a competent data protection supervisory authority if you believe that the processing of your personal data violates applicable data protection law.

Compensation

As a token of appreciation, participants who complete the survey may choose to enter a prize draw for a €15 gift voucher or, if they are enrolled as students at SRH University in Germany, receive 0.5 research participation credits (Versuchspersonenstunden). Participation requires the voluntary provision of an email address through a separate survey. This information is stored independently of the questionnaire data and cannot be linked to survey responses.
